Border War Rivals

Students from the University of Wyoming’s college newspaper The Branding Iron joined forces with the staff of the Rocky Mountain Collegian to produce an 8-page special section previewing the Border War basketball games on Feb. 15.

As one of the oldest college sports rivalries west of the Mississippi, the Rams and Cowboys always play each other tough. This year was no exception. The men made a 19-point comeback against the Cowboys in Laramie to win 77-70 while the CSU women lost a tough 43-40 battle to Wyoming at Moby Arena.

Watching the two staffs come together in the Collegian newsroom was a special treat for this adviser; I’m a native of Laramie and earned both of my degrees at UW, which included a one-year stint as the Branding Iron editor in chief.

While we’re all really happy with the way this 8-pager turned out, we’re even more excited to do it again during football season. Wyoming plays at CSU this fall, and it should be a helluva game. Wyoming is coming off of a win in the Arizona Bowl while CSU will be led by first-year coach Steve Addazzio, who is so into the rivalry he referred to UW as “the team from the north” in his introductory press conference. When you won’t even say the name of your rival, that’s a good sign the rivalry is alive and healthy.

The cover was designed by Brian Bessey, McKenna Nylander and Hayden Hess of the Branding Iron. The centerspread photo story and timeline was produced by Collegian design editor Amy Noble and photo editor Anna von Pechmann. Collegian sports editor Ryan Loberger also deserves high praise for his staff’s reporting efforts, and Branding Iron editor-in-chief Calie Siplon coordinated content from the UW side.
